For nearly 15 years, the Joan Duncan Foundation of JMMB has been a steadfast supporter of the Child Resiliency Programme, administered by the VPA. What began as a modest contribution to the Hope United Church where the CRP was first launched in 2006,has evolved into a long-term partnership that continues to transform lives across several Kingston communities.
Today, the Foundation serves as the main donor to 85 children annually, referred to the CRP from St. Alban’s, St. Annie’s, Edward Seaga, Boys’ Town, Trench Town, Jones Town, and Mountain View Primary and Infant Schools. Through this support, hundreds of children considered “at promise” have been given opportunities to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically, despite the challenges they face in violence-prone environments.
The Foundation’s impact extends beyond direct programme support. Its generosity has also enabled the establishment and growth of the Peace Institute at the International University of the Caribbean (IUC). The Institute trains over 100 Psychology, Education, and Frontline workers annually through online courses, equipping them with the CRP model and essential tools to build Peace, Resiliency, and Wellness, both for themselves and for the children they serve, particularly those affected by trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences.
Dr Kim Scott, Director of the CRP have commended the Joan Duncan Foundation for its partnership approach, describing it as one grounded in trust, respect, and consistency. She said unlike many donor relationships that can be restrictive or overly bureaucratic, this collaboration has fostered freedom, creativity, and innovation, allowing the CRP team to focus on quality implementation and meaningful outcomes for children and families.
“The Joan Duncan Foundation’s quiet faithfulness has been nothing short of transformative,” said Dr Scott. “Their support has provided a cornerstone for our work with children, empowering us to reach more families and strengthen the capacity of those who care for them.”
