The Child Resiliency Program at Chalky Hill Primary is making remarkable strides in fostering personal growth and emotional intelligence among its young participants. Currently, 12 boys are benefiting from this innovative initiative, which integrates sports, literacy, drumming, and circle time into its curriculum.

Jonelle Llewellyn, Research Associate at the VPA said that these hands-on activities are designed to provide a safe, interactive learning environment that encourages reflection, builds emotional resilience, and nurtures essential life skills.

Sessions within the programme aim to create a space where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and connecting with peers, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

“By developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, the programme equips participants with the tools needed to navigate life’s challenges effectively. This is about more than just academics,” shared Miss Llewellyn. “We’re helping these young boys build a foundation for a successful future by nurturing their emotional and social well-being.”

Parental involvement is a key aspect of the initiative, with workshops tailored to the needs of parents of programme participants. These sessions aim to ensure that nurturing continues at home, reinforcing the programme’s objectives and fostering a supportive environment for the children’s growth, she explained.

Expanding Opportunities for Young Adults

Complementing the efforts at Chalky Hill Primary, the workforce development component of the VPA Steer Town Project is creating pathways to economic growth for young adults. Targeting individuals aged 18 to 29, the programme focuses on job readiness, vocational training, and employment placements. This initiative seeks to empower youth at risk, unattached individuals, and young parents without income-earning opportunities.

Miss Llewellyn disclosed that the workforce development initiative is set to identify 30 youth participants through needs assessments in December, with job readiness workshops scheduled to begin in January 2025. These workshops will equip participants with critical skills, paving the way for meaningful employment and fostering long-term community growth.

“Through these complementary efforts, Chalky Hill Primary and the VPA Steer Town Project are addressing the holistic development of individuals—from childhood resilience to young adult economic empowerment. Together, they exemplify the power of community-driven initiatives in creating sustainable opportunities and fostering a brighter future,” she said.
