Child Resiliency Programme Advances Training and Support Initiatives

The Child Resiliency Programme (CRP) has continued to make strides in building peace, resiliency, and wellness (PRW) among university students and caregivers this summer semester.

In partnership with the Peace Institute at the International University of the Caribbean (IUC), the CRP trained 112 university students enrolled in Guidance and Counseling, and Bachelor of Education and Psychology programmes. These efforts culminated in the integration of the CRP into the newly renovated Peace Institute office.

The CRP extended its training efforts to community leaders and caregivers, offering PRW training to 20 Project STAR Facilitators and community leaders, as well as 25 guidance counselors from the Jamaica Guidance Counseling Education (JAGCE) at Alhambra Inn between April and June 2024.

In addition to university and community training, the CRP supported 60 children aged 9-11, identified as “at risk” from various primary schools including Edward Seaga, Trench Town, Boys Town All Age, St. Alban’s, and St. Annie’s Primary. Another 25 children at the Mountain View Primary and Infant center also benefitted from literacy and nutritional support, life skills training, creative and sporting activities, parent training, counseling, and home visits. These activities were designed to reinforce life skills and provide holistic support to the children and their families.

A total of 85 children participated in ‘Fun Days,’ and celebratory programme leaving ceremonies were held at Mountain View Primary and Infant and Boys Town on June 17th and 18th, respectively. To reward their progress, the children enjoyed field trips to Castleton Gardens and Hope Gardens on June 22nd.

From June 3 to 5, 12 University of Toronto students from the Peace and Sports for Development faculty led programme activities at Boys Town, creating an exciting and enriching experience for all involved.

The CRP also completed an evaluation of its replication site at Steer Town Primary. The evaluation report, detailing PRW training objectives and outcomes from Boys Town and Mountain View Primary and Infant , will be available in July 2024.

Additionally, the CRP has developed an Operational Guideline Manual and kit, along with a PRW training manual, positioning the leadership team for further training and evaluation of future replication sites.
